Thoughts on the Joola Gen 3’s— By Destin Perry

I wanted to share my thoughts on the Joola Gen 3 paddle with you. This paddle has an incredible feel with awesome power and spin, making it a good option for advanced or high intermediate players. However, it's had its fair share of controversy. The USAP delisted it, which led to months of debate between players and the company. One major issue is the "Core Break In" where the inner foam core gets "hot" over time, changing how the paddle plays and sometimes causing a rattling sensation. Because of these risks, I can't recommend it as your go-to paddle.

That said, if you're still interested, this paddle can be really fun in the right hands. It’s a great choice for harder hitters. But be aware, its top-heavy design isn't for everyone and may take time to master for short game and touch shots. Despite its impressive specs, what I don’t like about these paddles is that they seem to give great value in performance with the foam core, but then put a good paddle on the “durability clock.” I’m not a huge fan of this and I see the industry potentially going down a dark path of forcing players to rebuy paddles every few months. All that to say, I don’t think this would be a good primary paddle.

How to Defeat Hard-Hitting Bangers in Pickleball— By Kyle Koszuta

Hey everyone,

What’s a banger? Simply put, a banger hits every shot hard. Their strategy is straightforward: hit the first shot hard, the third shot hard, and so on. They want to smash every ball they see.

First, let’s adopt the mindset that “if they bang, they pay.” Expect them to hit hard and be ready for it. When it comes to physical strategies, start with your serve reception. Stand a few feet behind the line to adjust for their powerful serve, allowing you to move forward smoothly.

Next, focus on your return. Hit the ball deep and move up to the kitchen line. A deeper return gives you more time to react and reduces the pressure from their next shot. If your opponent’s strong player is on the left, return to their backhand to exploit weaknesses.

Blocking is another crucial skill. Aim to block deep into the court or at their feet, maintaining a wide stance and a firm wrist to prevent pop-ups. Adjust to a continental grip for better control. If you find yourself hitting a short return, freeze and split-step to prepare for their attack. Your partner can help cover the middle, giving you time to get up to the kitchen.

Remember, playing against bangers requires a proactive approach. Don’t just stand back—bring the force back to them and show that their strategy won’t work.

Madeleine Rasmusen’s Clash with Anna Leigh Waters— By David Boyle

I came across an interesting match at the 2024 Veolia Sacramento Open that has flown under the radar. One commenter even asked, "Why do they even post this?" But I'm glad they did. Anna Leigh Waters faced newcomer Madeleine Rasmusen, a match many assumed would be an easy win for AL. Despite her low ranking, Rasmusen showed determination and grit, using the match as a learning experience and an investment in herself, regardless of the outcome.

This match got me thinking about the gap between recreational and professional players. Some recreational players believe they’ve mastered the game, yet they rely on repetitive strategies without understanding the broader aspects of play. Madeleine Rasmusen’s willingness to step onto the pro court against a top player like AL Waters exemplifies courage and humility. She tested her skills, learned from the experience, and maintained her composure and sportsmanship throughout. This match is a valuable lesson for anyone aspiring to reach higher levels in pickleball. Congrats to both Anna Leigh on her victory and Madeleine for her admirable effort and attitude.
